Well, now, I reckon there’s somethin’ sad we gotta talk about today. It’s ’bout a man named Robert Mahoney, or Bob as folks liked to call him, who has passed on and left this world behind. He was a Boston boy, born on October 1, 1940. Lived a good, long life of 80 years, bless his soul. He went peacefully on May 16, 2021, down in Holiday, where he had made his home in his later years. I suppose life ain’t always fair, but ain’t that just the way things go sometimes.
Now, I ain’t one for fancy words or stories that don’t make sense. So let me tell you a bit about Bob. He was born in Boston, just like a lot of folks around these parts. His mama, Mary McTernan, and his papa, John Mahoney, raised him up with love. Bob was a man who worked hard all his life, and folks knew him as a kind and caring person. He was the type to give ya the shirt off his back if you needed it, no questions asked. Ain’t too many like him anymore, if you ask me.
He had a family that loved him dearly. I reckon that’s one of the things that made him proud. Bob had children—Brian Mahoney from Chatham, and Carol Anderson who lived out in Montana. They loved their daddy, and he loved them right back, you could see it in his eyes when he talked ’bout ’em. He also had a wife, Joan, who he spent many years with. Folks who were close to him say that him and Joan were a pair, always together, always lookin’ out for each other. Ain’t no greater love than that, I tell ya.
Bob didn’t just have his family, though. He had plenty of friends too, folks who’d known him for years, some from Boston, some from all over. I hear he used to live in South Boston before he moved to Norwell. It wasn’t always easy, but he made the best of it. Those who knew him say he was always the same—good heart, always ready to help where he could, and had a smile that could light up a room.
Now, the news of his passing came on the 9th of May, 2021. And though it was a sad day, the family took comfort in knowin’ that he had gone peaceful. They say he died at home, surrounded by the people who loved him most. That’s a good way to go, if you ask me. Ain’t no better place to be than home, with your family by your side.
Bob’s journey on this earth might be over, but his memory lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. It don’t matter how much time passes, a good man like Bob don’t get forgotten. He was a part of Boston, a part of the fabric that makes up this ol’ world of ours. And even though we miss him, we know that he’s up there lookin’ down on us, still smiling, still watchin’ over his loved ones.
Folks, if you ever meet someone like Bob Mahoney in your life, you hold on tight. Because people like him don’t come around every day. They give us hope, they show us what it means to be kind, and they remind us to live our lives with love and integrity. So let’s raise a glass to Bob, and remember all the good he did in this world.
Rest in peace, Bob. You were loved, and you’ll always be remembered.
