Buffalo Totem: Meaning, Symbolism and Spiritual Significance

Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this buffalo thing, alright? Folks say it’s a totem, a spirit animal or somethin’ like that. Now, I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I heard things, ya know? Seen things too, back in the day.

Them buffalos, they were a big deal for the Injuns, the Native Americans, they called ’em. Way I heard it, them buffalos weren’t just animals to them folks. They were like family. Can ya believe that? Family! Guess it makes sense though, seein’ as how much them buffalos gave ’em.

Buffalo Totem: Meaning, Symbolism and Spiritual Significance
  • Food, that’s for sure. Lots and lots of meat. Enough to feed a whole village, I reckon.
  • Shelter too. Them hides, they used ’em to make tents, them teepees I think they called ’em.
  • Clothes, yep. Kept ’em warm in the winter, I betcha. Coats and such.
  • Medicine even! Don’t ask me how, but them Injuns knew how to use everythin’.
  • And tools, can ya imagine? Bones and horns, they made all sorts of things outta them.

Them Injuns, they sang songs ’bout the buffalo, danced for ’em, and even prayed to ’em. That’s what I heard anyways. Said the buffalo brought ’em good luck and kept ’em alive. Their whole lives, it was all ’bout the buffalo. Dependin’ on ’em for everythin’, ya see.

Now, some folks say buffalo and bison, they’re pretty much the same thing. Same meanin’ and all that. Spirit wise, I mean. If you got the buffalo as your totem, well, that’s somethin’ special, they say. I ain’t got no totem myself, far as I know. Just an old woman, that’s all.

But seein’ as how important them buffalos were, it makes ya think. They were strong, powerful creatures. Stood their ground, they did. Protected their own. And they gave everything they had, didn’t they? Maybe that’s what havin’ a buffalo spirit is all about. Bein’ strong, bein’ generous, and takin’ care of your own.

I remember seein’ pictures of them herds, way back when. Miles and miles of buffalos, just roamin’ free. Must’ve been somethin’ to see. Nowadays, you don’t see that no more. Shame, it is. We done messed things up pretty good, ain’t we?

Anyways, if you got the buffalo as your totem, you should be proud. It’s a powerful animal. Means somethin’ good, I reckon. Strength, protection, givin’ back… that’s what it says to me. Remember them Injuns, how they lived. They respected the buffalo, and the buffalo took care of them. Maybe there’s a lesson in that for all of us, ya know?

Buffalo Totem: Meaning, Symbolism and Spiritual Significance

So, there ya have it. That’s what I know ’bout the buffalo totem. Ain’t much, maybe, but it’s somethin’. Just an old woman’s ramblings, I guess. But them buffalos, they were somethin’ special. And maybe, just maybe, their spirit is still around, watchin’ over us.

Think about it, alright? Take care now.
