Alright, let’s talk about this ‘opossum totem’ thing, whatever that means. I ain’t no fancy scholar, but I’ll tell ya what I know, or what I heard, anyways.
So, this possum… or opossum, they say it’s the same darn thing, just different spellin’. Like them city folks got nothin’ better to do than make up extra letters. Anyway, this critter, it don’t live too long. That means if it’s your… totem, yeah, that’s the word, it means you’re young at heart. You see the world like a little kid, even when you’re old and grey like me.
Them possums, they’re kinda like the spirit animals for young’uns, I guess. Always runnin’ around, gettin’ into everything. Reminds me of my grandkids, bless their hearts.

- And they sure are good at makin’ babies, that’s for sure. So maybe that’s why they say it’s about havin’ babies and such.
If you see one of them critters crossin’ your path, watch out! It might mean there’s some bad people around, tryin’ to cause trouble. But if you see a dead one… well, that’s sad, but maybe it means you need to spend more time with your family. Go visit your ma, or your kids, or your grandkids. They’re what matters in this life, not all that other stuff.
You know, the name ‘opossum’ comes from some Injun word, somethin’ like ‘apasum’. Means ‘white face’. Them Injuns knew a thing or two about nature, that’s for sure. Sometimes in them old stories, the possum is like a clown, always playin’ dead when he messes up. Kinda silly, if you ask me, but that’s what they say.
There’s even some kinda… goddess of the possums, they call her ‘Didelphi’. Sounds fancy, don’t it? I don’t know much about goddesses, but if she’s lookin’ after them possums, then she’s alright by me.
These possums, they’re tough little critters. They gotta be, to survive out there in the wild. They can live anywhere, eat anything. That’s what they call ‘adaptability’, big word for just gettin’ by. Maybe that’s the lesson they’re teachin’ us, learn to make do with what you got.
The book learnin’ folks, they call ’em marsupials, some kinda fancy name for animals with pouches. The ones we got around here are white and gray, you see ’em scurryin’ around at night. The name, it came from them English folks way back when, they learned it from the Injuns around Jamestown. Just goes to show, even them fancy English folks had to learn a thing or two from the folks who were here first.
If you feel somethin’ special when you see a possum, maybe it’s your “totem”. I ain’t sure what all that means, but if it makes you feel connected to somethin’ bigger than yourself, then that’s a good thing, I reckon. They say it’s about bein’ curious, thinkin’ ahead, makin’ the best of things. Sounds like good advice to me, no matter where it comes from.
So there you have it, what I know about this opossum totem thing. Maybe it ain’t much, but it’s the truth, as far as I can tell. You take it or leave it, makes no difference to me. I gotta go feed the chickens now.
