The Elder Futhark, that’s the old, old one, it’s got 24 runes. Twenty-four! That’s a whole lot of scratchin’ on rocks or wood, if you ask me. They say it’s like their alphabet, the old timers used it to write stuff. Probably love letters or somethin’, who knows?
Then there’s this Younger Futhark, a bit newer, I guess. It’s got fewer, only 16. Guess they got tired of writin’ so much, or maybe they just run out of space on them stones. Sixteen sounds more manageable to me, though. Less to remember, you know?

But hold your horses, it ain’t just them two. Some folks, they like to add more runes, make their own set, you know? Like they ain’t got enough to worry about already. I don’t know what it means, maybe it means nothin’, maybe it means everythin’. Runes are like that, always makin’ you scratch your head.
So, if you’re countin’, you gotta figure out which set you’re talkin’ about. Is it the old Elder Futhark with its 24 runes? Or the Younger one with 16? Or maybe it’s one of them fancy modern sets with extra runes or witchy runes? Or maybe it’s got that blank rune, too. See? It ain’t easy.
It’s like askin’ how many eggs are in a basket. Well, it depends on the basket and who packed it, right? Same thing with runes. It all depends on who made the set and what they wanted to put in it. That’s the long and short of it.
But if you want a simple answer, most folks talk about the Elder Futhark, the one with 24 runes. That’s the one you hear about most, so that’s probably the one you should remember. Twenty-four runes. That’s a lot, but at least it’s a number you can hold onto.
