Alright, let’s talk about this here possum spirit animal thing. You know, the critters that play dead? Yeah, them. I ain’t no fancy expert, but I’ve seen a thing or two in my life, and I can tell ya, these possums got more to ’em than meets the eye.
First off, they say possum folks are kinda like young’uns at heart, always seein’ the world with fresh eyes. Makes sense, I guess. Them possums don’t live too long, so maybe they just gotta pack all that livin’ into a short time. Kinda like how we used to live on the farm, workin’ from sunup to sundown, gettin’ the most outta each day.
Now, some folks call ’em “resourceful.” Well, I call it plain ol’ smart. You gotta be smart to survive out there, especially when you’re a little fella like a possum. They gotta outsmart everything – dogs, cars, even other critters tryin’ to steal their food. It’s a tough world, and them possums, they just figure out how to make do. Reminds me of my old man, always fixin’ things with whatever he had on hand. Duct tape and baling wire, that’s how we rolled.
- They say possum means you can handle whatever life throws at ya.
- You’re tough, like a weed growin’ through concrete.
- And you’re clever, like a fox sneakin’ into a henhouse. (Not that I condone stealin’ chickens, mind you.)
The Injuns, they called the possum “apasum,” which means “white face.” Funny, huh? I always just thought they looked kinda goofy, with them beady little eyes and that pointy nose. But I guess there’s more to it than that. Some stories say the possum plays dead ’cause he’s embarrassed. Imagine that! A critter gettin’ all flustered and fallin’ over like he’s fainted. Makes you wonder what goes on in their little heads.
And speaking of playin’ dead, that’s their big trick, ain’t it? Keeps ’em alive when things get hairy. Smartest thing they do, if you ask me. Pretend you’re gone, and maybe that mean ol’ dog will lose interest and go sniffin’ somewhere else. It’s like that old sayin’, “fight or flight,” but the possum, he adds a third option: “faint.” He’s a survivor, pure and simple. They can get through anything. Just like me and my family, we had some tough times, real tough times, but we made it through, same as a possum.
Now, some folks get all confused about “possum” and “opossum.” Listen here, it’s the same darn thing. Just like callin’ soda “pop” or “coke.” It don’t matter none, it’s all the same fizzy drink. Same with the possum, whether you say the “o” or not, it’s still that little critter with the ratty tail and the creepy grin. Don’t let them fancy words fool ya.
So, if the possum is your spirit animal, what’s it mean? Well, like I said, you’re probably a young soul, no matter how old you are. You’re adaptable, can handle anything. You’re a survivor. You’re clever, resourceful and you probably got a good sense of humor too, ’cause let’s face it, them possums are kinda funny lookin’. And if things get tough, you know how to play dead, lay low, and wait for the storm to pass. It’s what I learned, and it’s gotten me this far.
You are tough as nails, you can make do with whatever you’ve got, and you never give up. And that, my friends, is somethin’ to be proud of. It ain’t always easy, but it’s the way life is, for us and them possums.
One last thing, though. Them possums, they’re wild animals. You see one, best to just leave it alone. Don’t go tryin’ to pet it or feed it, ’cause they got teeth and claws, and they ain’t afraid to use ’em. Just admire ’em from afar, and appreciate their grit and their cleverness. That’s what I do.
