Art Nouveau Tarot Card Deck Review: A Collectors Must-Have

Alright, let’s talk about this… this… art… new-vo… tarot card thingy. My grandkid, the one with the fancy ideas, got me one of these decks. Said it was pretty. I dunno, looks like a bunch of pictures to me, but she says it’s special, so I figured I’d give it a whirl.

First off, the box itself is somethin’. Shiny, you know? Got a lady with wings on the front, pourin’ water from one cup to another. My grandkid says she’s called “Temperance”. Sounds fancy. On the back, there’s another lady, this one’s got a lion. “Strength”, they call her. Well, I guess you need some strength to deal with all these cards, ha!

Now, the cards themselves, they’re… narrow, not like those big ol’ playing cards we used to use for poker. But they feel nice and sturdy, not flimsy like some things you buy these days. The pictures, though, that’s where it gets… interesting. They’re all curvy and swirly, like… well, like vines and flowers all tangled up together. My grandkid says it’s “Art Nouveau” style. Sounds French, or somethin’. She says it’s all the rage, this kind of fancy art. I just see a bunch of lines, but hey, what do I know?

The thing is, these cards, they ain’t got no names on ‘em. You gotta know what they mean, I guess. But they got pictures, so that helps. Like, there’s one with a fella standin’ on a cliff, lookin’ all carefree, like he’s about to jump. My grandkid says that one’s the “Fool”. Seems kinda harsh, callin’ someone a fool, but that’s what they call it. There’s another with a lady sitting on a throne, got a coin in her hand. That one’s the “Queen of Pentacles”, whatever a pentacle is. Sounds like somethin’ you’d find in a church, but my grandkid says it’s about money and stuff. Go figure.

  • There’s this card with the sun shinin’ bright, makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That’s supposed to be a good card, means good things are comin’.
  • Then there’s this other one with swords stickin’ out everywhere, looks kinda scary. That one means trouble, I guess.
  • And there are cups, and wands, and all sorts of other things. It’s a whole lotta stuff to remember, let me tell ya.

My grandkid, she tried to teach me how to “read” the cards. Said it’s about tellin’ the future, or understandin’ yourself better. I don’t know about that. I just see pictures. But she says it’s like those regular playing cards, you know, the ones with hearts and diamonds? Apparently, there’s one card, the 9 of hearts, that’s supposed to be real lucky. Wishes and all that. But she says nobody ever gets that card when she’s doin’ the readin’. Maybe it’s just shy.

Now, these art new-vo cards, they’re kinda like that old Rider-Waite deck, the one everyone uses, or so my grandkid tells me. She says that deck is super popular, millions of ‘em all over the world. These art new-vo cards got the same kinda pictures, but they’re all… dressed up, you know? Like puttin’ on your Sunday best. The pictures are all fancy and detailed, kinda like those old paintings you see in museums. My grandkid says it follows the same “imagery and symbolism,” whatever that means. All I know is, it looks like a whole lot of work went into makin’ these cards.

And they got this little black star thingy in the corner of the Fool card, my grandkid says it’s called an “inverted mullet.” Sounds like a bad haircut to me! Apparently, that’s been a thing since the 1930s. Who knew? These tarot folks have been at it for a long time, I guess.

So, do I understand this art new-vo tarot deck? Not really. Do I think it’s pretty? Well, it’s somethin’ to look at, that’s for sure. But my grandkid, she seems to get a kick out of it, and that’s good enough for me. Maybe one day I’ll figure it all out. Or maybe I’ll just stick to lookin’ at the pictures. They’re pretty, even if I don’t know what they mean. And they definitely got that… that… new-vo… something to them. Fancy swirls and all.

At the end of the day, it’s just cards, right? But hey, if it makes my grandkid happy, and it keeps her outta trouble, then I’m all for it. And who knows, maybe there’s somethin’ to it after all. Maybe these curvy pictures can tell you somethin’ about yourself, or about what’s gonna happen. I wouldn’t bet on it, but then again, I never was much of a gambler.
