Well, I’ll tell ya, these Christian runes, they’re somethin’ else. Not sure what all the fuss is about, but folks keep talkin’ ’bout ’em.
Some say they’re just old marks, like scratches on a rock or somethin’. You know, like the kinda marks you see on them old trees where the cows rub up against. But these here runes, they mean somethin’, or so they say. People carved ’em a long, long time ago. Way before my time, that’s for sure. My grandpappy used to tell stories ’bout old things, maybe he knew somethin’ ’bout this.
They say these runes, they help you understand the old ways, the spirit stuff. Spirits, huh? I ain’t seen no spirits, but my neighbor, old Maggie, she swears she saw one down by the creek last summer. Said it looked like a hazy kinda light. Maybe them runes got somethin’ to do with it, I don’t know.
- Ancient Symbols: That’s what they call ’em. Fancy words for old scratches, if you ask me. But folks get all worked up over ’em. They study ’em, try to figure ’em out. Like tryin’ to figure out why the rooster crows at 3 in the mornin’. Some things just are, I guess.
- Understanding: They say these runes help you understand things. Like understandin’ why the corn didn’t grow so well last year. Or understandin’ why old man Johnson’s dog keeps barkin’ at the moon. I understand enough already, thank ya very much. I understand that the chickens need feedin’ and the garden needs weedin’. That’s enough understandin’ for one day.
Now, some folks, they talk about Viking warriors and crosses and hammers. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me. Vikings, they were tough fellas, I hear. Big and strong, with beards like my old goat, Billy. But I don’t see what that’s got to do with these runes. Maybe they used ’em for somethin’, maybe they didn’t. Who’s to say?
And then there’s this Odin fella. They say he’s got somethin’ to do with the runes too. Odin, sounds like a fancy name for a town down south. I reckon he was a big shot back then, like the mayor or somethin’. Maybe he told folks what the runes meant, or maybe he just made it all up. You know how them big shots are, always tellin’ you what to do.
They say these runes are an alphabet. Like the ABC’s? Well, I learned my ABC’s a long time ago, in that little one-room schoolhouse down the road. But these runes, they look nothin’ like the ABC’s I know. They look like chicken scratchin’s, to be honest.
There’s a whole bunch of ’em, they say. Twenty-four, I think I heard. That’s a lot of scratches. And they got ’em all sorted out, like families or somethin’. Sounds complicated to me. I got enough trouble keepin’ track of my own family, let alone a bunch of scratchy marks. They got names too, like Freyr and Freyja. Sounds like somethin’ you’d name a dog, not a scratch on a rock.
And get this, they say these runes had magical powers. Magical powers! Like makin’ the rain fall or makin’ the crops grow better? If that was true, why didn’t them old timers use ’em to stop the big drought back in ’34? Lost all my corn that year, I did. They say you could predict the future with ’em, keep yourself safe from harm. Sounds like a bunch of baloney, if you ask me. But then again, maybe there’s somethin’ to it. The world’s a strange place, full of things we don’t understand.
They say these runes were carved on stones and wood. Well, we got plenty of stones and wood around here. Maybe I should go find me a rock and start scratchin’ some runes on it. See if I can make some magic happen. Maybe I can make my tomatoes grow bigger this year. Or maybe I can just stick to plantin’ ’em in good soil and waterin’ ’em regular. That’s always worked for me before.
But seriously, I don’t know much about these Christian runes. Seems like a lot of people are interested in ’em, though. Maybe they’re onto somethin’, maybe they ain’t. Me, I’ll stick to what I know. And what I know is that hard work and a little bit of luck will get you further than any old scratches on a rock. But hey, if them runes make you happy, then you go right ahead and scratch away. Just don’t be askin’ me to figure ’em out. I got enough on my plate as it is.
