Well, let me tell you somethin’ about this here VEX V5 business. My grandkids, they’re all into these robots, building ’em, coding ’em, the whole shebang. Now, back in my day, we had sticks and stones, but these young’uns, they got these fancy robot things. They tried to show me, but I just nodded and smiled. It is all way over my head.
They kept talkin’ about this “PyPI” thing. I thought they were talking about some kind of pie, but turns out it’s got somethin’ to do with that Python thing. “What’s a Python?” I asked ’em. “Is that some kind of snake?” They laughed and said it’s how they make the robots do things. These kids and their computer talk! It’s like a whole other language. They say PyPI is how they get all the fancy code they need. This VEX thing is complicated!
And then there’s this VSCode thing. Sounds like some kind of secret code to me. They say it’s where they write all the instructions for the robots. Now, I can write a grocery list just fine, but this is somethin’ else. They got all these colorful words on the screen, and they’re typing faster than a chicken pecks at seeds. I asked ’em, “Can’t you just tell the robot what to do?” They said, “No, Grandma, you gotta use VSCode.” Kids these days!

Apparently, you gotta put the code, the Python stuff they wrote in VSCode, into the VEX V5. Like puttin’ a brain in its head, I suppose. It’s all a bit much for me to keep track of.
One time, they were talkin’ about somethin’ called “vex”. Now, I know what it means to be vexed, it means you’re all riled up. But they weren’t riled up, they were excited. This “vex” is apparently part of that PyPI place, and it helps with the VEX V5, especially in that VSCode. They say they use it to make the robot do all sorts of fancy things. These kids and their lingo! They kept going on and on about “vex” this and “vex” that. I just kept nodding.

- Finally, they “download” it to the VEX V5 brain.
- And then, the robot comes to life!
They tried to teach me how to do it once. They said, “Grandma, it’s easy! You just gotta use VSCode and PyPI and make sure your VEX V5 is connected.” I just stared at ’em. It sounded like they were speakin’ a foreign language. I told ’em, “Honey, I’m happy just watchin’ you young’uns do your thing.” I’ll stick to my knitting, thank you very much.
But I gotta say, it is mighty impressive what these kids can do with these robots. They spend hours in that VSCode, typin’ away, gettin’ stuff from PyPI, and messin’ with that VEX V5. And then, like magic, those robots come to life. It’s all beyond me, but it sure is entertainin’ to watch. Those robots are almost as smart as my grandkids, and those kids sure do love their VEX things.
I may not understand all this VSCode, PyPI, and VEX V5 business, but I’m proud of my grandkids. They’re learnin’ new things, and that’s what’s important. And who knows, maybe one day they’ll build a robot that can do my chores for me! A grandma can dream, can’t she?
