Well, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout this thing, “run Python vex vscode”, sounds like some kinda fancy tractor, I reckon. But my grandson, he’s a smart one with them computers, he told me it ain’t no tractor. It’s somethin’ you do on that computer machine. So, I’m gonna try to tell ya what he told me, best I can remember. It might be all wrong. It’s hard to learn new things when you are as old as me. I hope it’s useful for you!
First, he said somethin’ ’bout “VS Code”. Sounds like a secret code, maybe? But it ain’t. It’s just a thing, a program, he said, where you write down them computer words, them instructions. Like when I write down my grocery list, but way more complicated. To run Python in VS Code, you gotta have this thing first, I guess. It is easy to get VS Code, just like go to the market and buy vegetables.
Then there’s this other thing called “Python”. Now, that sounds like a snake, a big one! But it ain’t no snake either. It is a tool, just like hammer and sickle. It’s another one of them computer things, a language, he said. Like how I talk English, the computer, it talks Python. If you wanna make it work, just like I wanna make my TV work, I gotta push the right buttons, right? Same with this Python thing.
So, you got this VS Code thing, and you got this Python thing. And you wanna make ’em work together. Like hitchin’ up a horse to a plow, I suppose. My grandson, he showed me how you gotta put some words in the VS Code. He did it so fast, I couldn’t hardly see! He said something like “type python” and then you write the name of the thing you wanna do. It’s kinda like callin’ a dog, I guess. You gotta call it by its name, and then it comes runnin’.
He typed somethin’ like “python *” and then somethin’ happened on the screen. I don’t rightly remember what, somethin’ about “Hello World!”. Maybe the computer was sayin’ hello to the whole world? These computers, they do some strange things, I tell ya. It is like magic. I don’t understand how it works.
He said to do that, you gotta “hit Enter”. Now, “Enter”, that’s just a button on that keyboard thing. Like the buttons on my old radio, but different. You gotta push it, and then the computer, it does what you told it to do. The computer is obedient if you push the correct button.
There was also this button up in the corner, looked like a little triangle, like a play button on my old tape player. He said you can push that too, to make it run Python. I just do what he told me. I don’t know why it works. If you don’t push the right button, you are not gonna get good results, I think.
He said this is the easiest way to run Python code. I don’t know why there are so many ways to do it. In my day, there is only one way to plant corn, and only one way to milk a cow. But with computers, there are so many different ways to do one thing.
- First, get that VS Code thing.
- Then, get that Python thing.
- Then, write some words in the VS Code.
- Then, push that “Enter” button or that triangle button.
- Then, somethin’ will happen on the screen.
I remember he said somethin’ ’bout “terminal” too. Sounds like somethin’ you get at the doctor’s, somethin’ bad. But it ain’t. It is also a place on the computer where you can type something. It’s all so confusin’.
This whole thing, it’s like bakin’ a cake. You gotta have the right ingredients, you gotta follow the recipe, and you gotta put it in the oven at the right temperature. If you mess up one step, the whole cake is ruined! Same with this computer stuff, I reckon. You gotta do it just right, or it won’t work. It’s very easy to make mistakes when using the computer. I always make mistakes.
My grandson, he makes it look so easy. He just types away, click, click, click, and things happen on the screen. Like magic! Me, I’m too old for this kinda stuff. I’m used to doin’ things with my hands, plantin’ seeds, tendin’ the garden, churnin’ butter. This computer stuff, it’s all in your head. It’s a young person’s game. It’s too hard for me.
But I hope this helps you some. Maybe you can figure it out better than I can. Just remember what I said: VS Code, Python, “python *”, “Enter”, triangle button. That’s all I remember. Good luck with your computer. And make sure you don’t get any real snakes in there! Don’t get confused by its name!
