Wooden Totem Pole: What They Mean & Where to Find Authentic Ones for Sale Online
Today, I want to share something I made with my own two hands. It’s a wooden totem pole, and let me tell you, it was quite the project!
I started with this big idea of making a totem pole for my backyard. It took me two weeks of work in total. I went to the local lumber shop to find a good piece of wood. I found this big long piece of red cedar that looked just right. It was heavy though, so I had to get some help carrying it home.
Once I got it home, I started to work on it. First, I drew out the design I wanted on the wood. I wanted to keep it simple, so I decided to carve out some basic animal shapes. I went with a bear, an eagle, and a fish. I thought these would look nice and they were not too complicated for a beginner like me.
Then came the hard part – the carving. I got out my tools – a few chisels, a mallet, and a saw. I started at the top with the eagle. I slowly chipped away at the wood, making sure not to take off too much at once. It was slow going, but I didn’t want to mess it up. After a lot of careful work, the eagle started to take shape.
- I carved an eagle at the top.
- Then a bear in the middle.
- And finally, a fish at the bottom.
Next, I moved on to the bear. This was a bit trickier because I had to make sure it looked different from the eagle. I spent a good amount of time getting the details right. I wanted it to look strong and sturdy. I added some extra lines to make it look furry.
Finally, I carved the fish at the bottom. This was the easiest one, but I still took my time. I made sure it had scales and a nice tail fin.
After all the carving was done, I smoothed out the rough edges with some sandpaper. Then, I applied a coat of varnish to protect the wood from the weather. I let it dry overnight.
The Result
The next day, I finally stood it up in my backyard. It looked great! I was so proud of what I had accomplished. It was a lot of hard work, but it was totally worth it. Now, I have a unique piece of art in my yard that I made myself. And every time I look at it, I remember the fun I had making it.
