Hey guys, it’s been a while, but I’ve been messing around with something pretty cool lately – the Marseilles deck of tarot cards. Yeah, I know, it sounds kinda mystical and all that, but trust me, it’s been a wild ride figuring this stuff out. So, I figured, why not share the whole experience with y’all?
First off, I got my hands on this deck, a reproduction of the old-school Tarot de Marseilles. I started digging around, trying to find out where these cards even came from. Turns out, they’ve been around since like the 13th century, and they got finalized in France in the 17th century. Pretty ancient, huh? This deck I got is supposed to be based on the 18th-century French images. The box looks cool, kinda old-fashioned, and it makes me feel like I’m holding a piece of history. I carefully unpacked it, there are 78 cards in total, and laid them out on the table.
Then, the real work began. I started with the 22 main cards, they’re called the ‘Major Arcana.’ Each card has all these symbols and colors, and I learned that every little detail means something. For example, one card is ‘The Sun’, another is ‘Justice’, and there’s one called ‘Death’. But, it is not really about death. I spent hours with the cards in my hands, flipping them over, comparing the pictures, and making notes. I had this notebook where I wrote down my first impressions of each card. Like, for the ‘Strength’ card, I wrote, “This is showing me inner strength is way more important than physical power.”
The other cards, the ‘Minor Arcana,’ they’re a bit different, kind of like a regular deck of playing cards but with an extra court card in each suit. I tried to do readings with them, just for myself at first. The instructions said my own mind is the key to figuring out the meanings of the cards. It was tough, I won’t lie. It’s not like reading a book, it’s more like… feeling your way through. I laid out the cards in different patterns, these are called ‘spreads’ I think. I started with a simple three-card spread for past, present, and future. The first time, it didn’t make much sense. But I kept at it, looking at the cards, thinking about my life, and slowly, slowly, it started to click. It is like the cards were telling me a story. I did this every day for a week, each time getting a little bit better at understanding the cards’ messages.
I also checked out some variations of the Marseilles deck. There is this Jodorowsky Marseilles deck, which is kind of a modern take on the old cards. The pictures are a little different, more colorful. One card in that deck, I think it’s called ‘The Emperor’, has an angel, which is supposed to represent spirit and soul. Also, I noticed that the colors of the clothing on the characters are always changing. It is not random, there is meaning behind it. Half blue and half red means it is not yet the royal purple. It’s pretty neat how they put all these little details in there. I compared the cards from the traditional deck and the Jodorowsky deck side by side, noting the differences. It is interesting how the same card can have slightly different meanings based on the artwork.
So yeah, it’s been quite a journey. I’m still a total newbie at this, but it’s been fun learning and exploring. I’m starting to see how these cards can be used to reflect on things, to get a different perspective. Who knew a deck of cards could be so deep? I’m thinking of maybe trying a more complex spread next, maybe one with ten cards. That’s going to be a challenge, but I’m up for it. I’ll keep you guys posted on how that goes!
