Okay, so, the other day, I got this idea stuck in my head about making a buffalo totem. Sounds kinda random, I know, but I’ve been feeling like I need a bit more, you know, strength and grounding in my life lately. So, I thought, why not try to make something that represents that?
First off, I had to figure out what I was even doing. I did a bit of reading, and it turns out that buffalos are a big deal in some cultures, especially for Native Americans. They see them as symbols of abundance, strength, and even self-sacrifice. The more I read, the more I felt like this was the right thing to do.
Next, I had to decide what to make this totem out of. I’m no sculptor, so carving something out of wood was out of the question. I thought about using clay, but I didn’t have any on hand, and I was too impatient to go out and buy some. Finally, I settled on using some scrap fabric and stuffing I had lying around from an old sewing project. It wasn’t the most traditional material, but hey, it’s what I had.
I started by sketching out a rough design. Nothing fancy, just a simple buffalo shape. Then, I cut out two identical pieces from the fabric and started sewing them together. Let me tell you, my sewing skills are rusty at best. It wasn’t pretty, but I managed to get the two pieces together, leaving a small opening to stuff it.
Stuffing the totem was surprisingly satisfying. I packed it full of the stuffing, giving it a nice, solid feel. It was starting to actually look like a buffalo! Once I was happy with the shape, I sewed up the opening and, just like that, I had my buffalo totem.
The Result
- Shape: It’s definitely recognizable as a buffalo, albeit a slightly wonky one.
- Feel: It’s soft and comforting to hold, which is a nice bonus.
- Symbolism: For me, it represents strength, resilience, and a connection to something bigger than myself.
Now, I keep my little buffalo totem on my desk where I can see it every day. It’s a good reminder to stay strong, be grateful for what I have, and to give back when I can. It might not be much, but this little guy has made a surprisingly big difference in how I’ve been feeling lately. It’s a simple thing, but it works for me. It became a good symbol for myself.
