Penny Dreadful Tarot Card Deck: Unboxing and Review for Beginners Who Want to Know!
Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with tarot cards for a while now. I started with the classic Rider-Waite deck, you know, the one everyone recommends for beginners. It’s got those simple, clear pictures that are easy to get. Plus, tons of books and websites use it as the basis for teaching tarot, so it was a no-brainer to start there.
But then, I stumbled upon something called the “Penny Dreadful Tarot.” I guess it’s based on some TV show, which I haven’t seen, but the name caught my eye. So I Googled it, and found some information about it. Turns out, it’s a full 78-card deck, just like the standard ones. It even has an extra card with instructions and another with the Showtime logo.
I decided to go ahead and order it. It took a few days, but it finally arrived. The box was pretty cool-looking. I opened it up and started flipping through the cards. The art is… different. It’s definitely got a darker, more gothic vibe than the Rider-Waite. The first card I pulled was “The Fool.” Normally, this one isn’t numbered, and it’s supposed to represent, like, innocence and new beginnings.
One thing I noticed right away is that there’s no artist credited anywhere. Kind of a bummer, because I’d love to know who created these images. But anyway, I spent some time looking at each card. I tried to connect them to what I already know about tarot, using the Rider-Waite as a kind of guide. Some cards were easier to figure out than others.
I tried doing a few simple readings with the deck. It was a bit tricky, I have to admit. The imagery is pretty intense, and it took some time to get used to. But I think with some more practice, I can get the hang of it.
I’m not sure if I’d recommend this deck to someone just starting out with tarot. It’s probably better to get comfortable with the basics first, using a more traditional deck. But for someone like me, who’s already got some experience, it’s a fun and interesting change of pace.
