Today I want to talk about some stuff I messed around with recently – giant runes in D&D. It started when I found this old carving on a cave wall during a hike. It looked ancient, and I later learned it was some sort of giant language.
So, I started digging around. Turns out, these runes are a whole thing in D&D. I got my hands on a copy of Storm King’s Thunder, and page 7 has this list of giant runes. Some of them were already familiar because they’re used by the Rune Knight. I just tried to find out more information about this from there.
I found this one thing called a “syn” rune, which is supposed to be about sight. It was on some old bowl and apparently, cyclopes used it. I also saw some people talking about a free PDF with more runes and some new race options. I didn’t grab it, but it sounded interesting.
Then I got into the whole idea of studying these runes. I imagined my character looking at them and trying to figure out what they meant. If you roll a 20 on an Intelligence (History) check, you can recognize them as giant language that has some serious power. I thought that was pretty cool, but I didn’t actually try to make my character study them yet.
I also read about these Eldritch giants who had all these magical abilities. They could detect and dispel magic, shoot magic missiles, and even create dimension doors. It makes you wonder what kind of power these runes really hold.
I’ve been playing a Rune Knight, which is a fighter subclass that uses giant magic. You can put these runes on your weapons and armor, and they give you bonuses. It got me thinking about maybe creating my own runes, but I haven’t gotten that far yet.
- Found a cool carving on a cave wall.
- Got Storm King’s Thunder and checked out the rune list.
- Learned about the “syn” rune and cyclopes.
- Heard about a PDF with more runes and stuff.
- Thought about my character studying the runes.
- Read about Eldritch giants and their powers.
- Played around with my Rune Knight and his abilities.
It’s been a fun little project. I’m not sure where it’ll go, but it’s cool to explore these different parts of D&D. Maybe I’ll make some custom runes for my game, or maybe I’ll just keep reading about the lore. Who knows!
