Today, I bumped into something called a “Horde Totem” in Final Fantasy XIV. Sounds kinda badass, right? So, I got curious and did a little digging.
It turns out this thing is some kind of carved idol that looks like a dragon called Nidhogg. Apparently, some shady folks called heretics use it in their rituals. Not really my scene, but hey, to each their own.
I started by just poking around the Eorzea Database. That place has info on everything in the game. I found out that these totems are dropped by bosses in certain trials. Names like Ravana, Thordan, Nidhogg, Sephirot – they all sound pretty tough.
Then, I stumbled upon some forum posts. Some players were talking about farming these totems to get mounts. You need 99 of them to buy a mount from some vendor. That’s a lot of grinding!
Here’s what I gathered:
- Farming: People were saying you can farm these bosses with a small group of high-level players. Makes sense, since these trials are probably meant for larger groups.
- Leveling: I read that you can level up pretty fast in certain areas by just killing a bunch of weak enemies. Might be useful for new players, I guess.
- Gear: Someone mentioned that new players often rely on the “equip best gear” button, which apparently isn’t always the best idea. Good to know!
So, what did I actually do? Well, I decided to give one of these trials a shot. I joined a group for the Nidhogg trial. It was pretty intense! Lots of dodging and attacking. In the end, we managed to beat him, and I got my very own Horde Totem. Feels good, man.
I’m not sure if I’ll farm 99 of these things for a mount, but it’s cool to know they exist. Maybe I’ll just keep this one as a souvenir. Or maybe I’ll try some of the other trials and see what other totems I can get. Who knows.
Anyway, that’s my little adventure with the Horde Totem. Just another day in the life of a casual gamer, I guess.
