Okay, so I saw this thing about “microwave features” in the NYT crossword the other day and it got me thinking. I mean, I use my microwave all the time, but do I really know what all those buttons do? Probably not. So, I decided to spend my weekend to figure it out.
First, I grabbed the manual for my microwave. It’s one of those over-the-range models, you know, the kind that saves space in the kitchen. I always thought these were no better than a countertop microwave. Turns out, they are pretty similar in terms of power and stuff. Anyway, I dug out the manual, and let me tell you, it was dusty! I don’t think I’ve ever looked at it before, not even when I bought it. I just plugged it in and started using it.
Experiment Time
Next, I decided to do some experiments. I grabbed some leftovers from the fridge – some rice, chicken, and veggies. I wanted to see if I could reheat them using different features instead of just hitting the “start” button like I usually do.
- I tried the “reheat” setting first. It asked me what kind of food it was, and I selected “dinner plate.” It took a little longer than my usual method, but the food was heated pretty evenly.
- Then, I experimented with the power levels. Usually, it’s always on high. I cooked some rice on 50% power, and it turned out fluffier than usual. Who knew?
- There was also a “sensor cook” option. I had no idea what that meant, but I gave it a shot with the chicken. The microwave did its thing, and the chicken came out hot and juicy. I guess the sensor knows what it’s doing.
My Results
After a whole afternoon of microwaving stuff, I realized there’s a lot more to these machines than I thought. The NYT article mentioned that the best microwave is the one that fits your kitchen. I agree, but I also learned it is helpful to know your microwave’s features. I found out that there were nine machines tested to find the best one. So many choices! It’s not just about making quick meals anymore, there is a way to make quick and delicious meals. I also learned that there was one answer for the Microwave Feature clue from May 20, 2024, in the NYT crossword puzzle. How about that!
I’m not saying I’m going to become a microwave expert or anything, but I’m definitely going to try using some of these features more often. It’s kind of fun to experiment, and who knows, maybe I’ll even improve my cooking. Or at least, my reheating game. It’s all about making life a little easier, right? And if a better-used microwave can do that, then I am all about it. My wife always said I can put my time into more productive things, and she was right! This weekend, I finally did it. Now time to clean up all the dishes I used to run my experiments!
