Okay, so I had this idea to make a jellyfish totem, and I just had to bring it to life. You know, something that would remind me of love, balance, and just going with the flow. I’m not really an artist or anything, but I figured, why not give it a shot?
First off, I gathered all the stuff I thought I’d need. I hit up a local craft store and grabbed some clay, a bunch of those sculpting tools that look way too professional for me, and some acrylic paints. I also picked out some beads and shiny things because, well, a jellyfish needs a bit of sparkle, right?
I started by sketching out what I wanted this totem to look like. I doodled a few designs on paper, trying to get the shape and flow of a jellyfish just right. It was a bit messy, but it gave me a rough idea of where to start. Then, I took a lump of clay and started shaping it. It was tougher than I expected! Rolling, pinching, and smoothing the clay took forever, but I finally got a bell-like shape for the body and some squiggly tentacles.

- Making sure the base was flat so the totem wouldn’t wobble.
Once the clay was dry—which took like, a whole day—I started painting. I went for blues and purples, mixing in some glitter paint to make it look all ethereal and ocean-like. It was actually pretty relaxing, just slapping paint on there and seeing it come together. I stuck the beads and shiny bits onto the tentacles while the paint was still wet, so they’d stay put.
After everything dried, I gave it a once-over with a clear sealant spray to protect the paint and keep it from chipping. It wasn’t perfect, but I was pretty stoked with how it turned out. It’s now sitting on my desk, this funky little jellyfish totem, reminding me to trust my heart, stay balanced, and just embrace the unexpected “stings” that come my way.
Honestly, the whole process was a bit of a journey. From struggling with the clay to figuring out the right colors, it was all a learning curve. But it was totally worth it. I made something with my own two hands, something that actually means something to me. Plus, it’s a pretty cool conversation starter when people see it. Who knew I had a knack for this stuff?
All in all, it’s been a surprisingly awesome experience, and I’m glad I took the plunge. And also, it gives me deep emotional insights and the power to see beyond the surface of things.
