So, I’ve been messing around with this whole idea of what makes Native American faces unique, and let me tell you, it’s been a trip. I mean, we’re talking about a huge group of people, with over 500 tribes, all from North America. So, obviously, there’s a ton of different looks going on.
I started out just looking at pictures, you know, old photos, new photos, whatever I could find. I was trying to see if there were any patterns, any features that kept popping up. And yeah, there were a few things that caught my eye.
- Head shape: It seemed like a lot of the faces I saw had this kind of oblong shape, like, longer than they were wide.
- Forehead: Not super high foreheads, but definitely noticeable.
- Cheekbones: Oh man, the cheekbones. Super prominent, like, they really stand out.
- Eyebrow ridge: There’s this ridge above the eyes, kind of makes the eyes look a bit deeper.
I dug a little deeper, started reading about the history of Native Americans, how they’ve been around for thousands of years. And it makes sense, right? That kind of time, that many different groups, you’re gonna get a lot of variation. But I did notice that modern stuff like eye and hair color didn’t seem to be part of the original picture. It was more about the bone structure.
Then I stumbled upon these composite images some guy named Amud made. He basically mashed up a bunch of old photos to create these “average” faces for different tribes. Super interesting stuff, and it really showed the variety I was seeing. You got some with wider noses, some with narrower, some with straight noses, some with a bit of a curve. And the eyes, too, they weren’t all the same. Some were rounder, some more almond-shaped. Then I did learn that people from different regions, like, say, Sub-Saharan Africa, tend to have different eye shapes and less prominent cheekbones compared to Native Americans. Also, Native Americans seem to have a wider face than Europeans.
Here’s What I Learned
It got me thinking about how we define beauty, and how it’s tied to our history and culture. What did surprise me though, was hearing about the Creek men, who apparently looked similar to the Cherokee, with these sharp features and what they call “aquiline” noses. And the women, with their big, arched eyebrows. Crazy, right?
So, yeah, that’s been my little adventure into the world of Native American facial features. It’s way more complex than I thought, but it’s also super fascinating. It is interesting that certain traits, like high cheekbones and a straight nose bridge, do show up a lot. I just thought I share what I did.
