Alright, let me tell you about this project I’ve been working on. It’s a totem pole, but not just any totem pole – a killer whale totem pole. Sounds pretty cool, right? I’ve always been fascinated by these majestic creatures and the rich symbolism they carry in Native American cultures, so I thought, why not try my hand at creating something that pays homage to that?
So, I started by doing a bit of digging. Turns out, killer whales, or orcas as they’re also known, are a big deal in these cultures. They symbolize all sorts of things like family, longevity, and protection, especially for travelers. The Haida people even refer to them as “skaana,” which means “spirit being.” Pretty deep stuff. And get this, orcas are actually the largest members of the dolphin family, with males growing up to 33 feet long and weighing around 22,000 pounds. That’s massive!
Armed with this newfound knowledge, I began sketching out some ideas. I wanted my totem pole to capture the essence of the orca’s symbolism. I also stumbled upon some existing designs, like the Kaagwaantaan totem pole, which features killer whales and clan symbols. There’s another one with a thunderbird on top, wings spread out and all. It’s all very inspiring.
After some back and forth, I finally settled on a design. It incorporates elements like a raven, a grizzly bear, a seal, and of course, the killer whale itself. It’s a mix of traditional symbols and my own artistic touch, if I may say so myself. I also decided to add a salmon in there because, well, it just felt right.
Now, bringing this design to life was a whole other challenge. I’m no master carver, that’s for sure, but I was determined to give it my best shot. I started with a good-sized piece of wood, and slowly but surely, I began to shape it according to my design. There was a lot of carving, sanding, and refining involved. Let me tell you, my hands were sore for days!
But seeing the totem pole take shape was incredibly rewarding. I decided to paint it using traditional colors, which really made the figures pop. It was a painstaking process, but I took my time to get the details right. Finally, after weeks of work, it was done. My very own killer whale totem pole, standing tall and proud.
It might not be perfect, and it’s definitely not something you’d find in a museum, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It’s a reminder of the beauty and power of these amazing animals, and the rich cultural heritage they represent. Plus, it’s a pretty unique addition to my backyard, if I do say so myself.
