mittens for running: which material is best, how to keep your fingers warm in the winter
So, I’ve been needing some new mittens for my winter runs, and let me tell you, finding the right pair has been a bit of a journey. I started off just grabbing a cheap pair from the local store, you know, the kind you can get for a couple of bucks. Figured they’d do the job, right? Well, not quite.
First time out, the wind just cut right through them. My fingers were freezing! I realized I needed something a bit more substantial. Then I thought, maybe wool is the way to go. I remembered reading somewhere that wool keeps you warm even when it’s wet, and that sounded perfect for sweaty runs. So, I got myself a pair of wool mittens.
They were definitely warmer, felt like a hug for my hands. But here’s the thing, they got kinda heavy and soggy when I started sweating. Not exactly ideal. I tried stuffing them into my waistband a few times, but that was not a good look. Plus, they took forever to dry afterward. Back to the drawing board.
Next up, I decided to try some synthetic ones. The ones I picked up had a Primaloft lining. I saw that it’s supposed to be water-resistant and good for really cold temps. I took them out for a spin, and they were pretty good! Kept my hands warm, and they were lightweight, so that was a plus.
- Cheap dollar-store mittens: These did nothing to stop the wind.
- Wool mittens: These were very warm but got soggy with sweat.
- Mittens with Primaloft lining: These worked pretty well! They kept my hands warm and were light.
What I have tried
But then I got thinking, maybe I should look for something waterproof, too. You never know when you’ll get caught in a bit of snow or rain, right? So, I did a bit more digging and found these Carhartt ones that are supposed to be windproof and waterproof. Score! Haven’t had a chance to really test them out in wet conditions yet, but they feel super durable and warm, so I’m optimistic.
It’s been a bit of trial and error, but I think I’m finally getting closer to finding the perfect running mittens. Gotta keep those fingers toasty, you know? I’ll keep you guys posted on how the Carhartt ones work out, especially if I encounter any unexpected snow or rain.
So yeah, that’s my mitten saga so far. Who knew finding the right pair could be such an adventure?
