Okay, so today I wanna talk about my trip to Nara, specifically my stay at this place called the Nara Totem Lodge. First off, let me tell you, spending a night in Nara is totally worth it. The city is super chill, almost like a ghost town in the late evening and early morning. It’s a nice change of pace, you know?

I started my journey by figuring out how long I wanted to be in Nara. A lot of folks just do day trips, which is cool, but I wanted more. Turns out, six to eight hours is perfect for a day trip, but even if you only have half a day, like four hours, you can still see a bunch of cool stuff. I decided to go all in and stay overnight.

Finding a place to stay was a bit of a challenge. Nara’s hotels aren’t exactly top-notch, but I stumbled upon this place, Nara Totem Lodge. It wasn’t fancy, but it had a certain charm to it. More importantly, it was a place to crash after a long day of exploring.

Next up, I made a list of all the places I wanted to hit. Nara’s got a bunch of famous spots, and the best part is they’re all pretty close to each other. You can totally walk around and see most of them. But there are also these local buses you can hop on to get to the main sites.

  • First on my list was Todaiji Temple. This place is famous for this massive bronze Buddha statue, the Nara Daibutsu. It’s seriously impressive.
  • Then there’s Nara Park, which is huge and full of those adorable deer.
  • I also wanted to check out the Nara National Museum and Kasuga Taisha Shrine.

Getting around Nara was a breeze. Like I said, it’s a small city, so walking is the way to go. I just put on my comfy shoes and started exploring. But if you’re not up for walking, those local buses are a good option.

Seeing the Sights

I spent the whole day checking out all the spots on my list. Todaiji Temple was definitely a highlight. That Buddha statue is something else. And Nara Park was just so peaceful, plus the deer are hilarious. They’ll come right up to you looking for snacks. The museum and the shrine were also really cool. I learned a bunch about Nara’s history and culture.

By the time evening rolled around, I was pretty beat. But it was so worth it. And that’s when Nara really shines. The streets are empty, and it’s just so quiet and peaceful. I grabbed some dinner, wandered around a bit more, and then headed back to the Nara Totem Lodge for some much-needed sleep.

So, yeah, that was my Nara adventure. Staying at the Nara Totem Lodge was part of the experience, and even though it wasn’t a five-star hotel, it was a good base for exploring the city. If you’re thinking about visiting Nara, I definitely recommend staying overnight. It’s a whole different vibe when the day-trippers are gone.
