I wanted to share my little adventure with you guys about building a waterfall feature in my backyard. It was quite the experience, let me tell you.
So, first off, I started by checking out some cool waterfall spots around Columbus, Ohio. I got some maps, driving directions, and even some pretty neat photos from other folks who’d been there. It gave me a good idea of what I was aiming for. The state’s got some truly amazing natural waterfalls, you know?
I wanted my waterfall to have some personality, some twists and turns, not just a boring straight drop. I saw some examples online where people just stacked three similar falls together, all facing the same way. No way I was doing that. My waterfall needed to be unique!
I began sketching out my design. I wanted some variety in the elevation changes, and I really wanted to create some visually interesting spots. I knew the sound would be important too, so I spent some time thinking about how the water would flow over the different levels. For example, you can split the same volume of water over a wider stone to slow it down, or two rocks almost touching, and the water will shoot out between them.
Then came the fun part – picking out the materials. I decided to use a mix of natural stones and some decorative rocks to give it a more polished look. I even thought about adding some plants and flowers around the waterfall to make it blend in with the rest of the garden. In addition, I have read some advice that suggests incorporating seating areas to create a space to relax and enjoy the waterfall, so I decided to make one.
Building it was a whole other story. I had to dig out the area, lay down a liner, and then start stacking the stones. It was like putting together a giant puzzle, and let me tell you, those stones were heavy! I definitely got a workout that day. After completing the stone structure, I began to dig a pit next to it to serve as a small pond into which the waterfall could flow. This would also create a place where I could grow some aquatic plants.
Once the main structure was done, I installed the pump and connected all the tubing. It took a bit of trial and error to get the water flow just right. I didn’t want it to be too strong or too weak. It had to be just perfect. I also incorporated some lighting to make it look magical at night.
Finally, the moment of truth arrived. I flipped the switch, and there it was – my very own backyard waterfall! It looked absolutely stunning, especially with the lights reflecting off the water. I added some comfortable seating around it, so now it’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a long day. The sound of the water is so soothing; it’s like having a little piece of nature right in my backyard.
