Alright, let’s talk about my little experiment today with Vel’Koz in ARAM. I’ve been trying to nail down a solid rune setup for this guy, and I think I’ve finally cracked the code.
First Attempt
So, my first attempt was a bit of a mess. I jumped straight into a game, I picked Vel’Koz, and I slapped on some runes that looked good on paper, you know, the usual stuff.
- Comet – Seemed like a good idea for poke.
- Manaflow Band – Because, you know, mana is important.
- Transcendence – Gotta get that ability haste.
- Scorch – More poke, right?
Then for my secondary, I went:
- Presence of Mind – Even more mana regen.
- Coup de Grace – Figured I’d be finishing off low-health enemies.
I loaded into the game, feeling pretty confident. But boy, was I wrong. My damage felt super underwhelming. I was constantly running out of mana, even with Manaflow Band and Presence of Mind. And sure, I was getting some poke off, but it wasn’t enough to make a real impact.
Research and Adjustments
I lost that game. Badly. It was rough. So, I decided to put the experiment on pause and hit up some forums, looked at some guides, you know the drill. Read the patch 14.24, even checked out what the pros were doing. And it turns out, I was way off the mark with my initial setup.
It seems like most people are running:
- Dark Harvest – For that sweet execute damage.
- Cheap Shot – Synergizes well with Vel’Koz’s CC.
- Eyeball Collection – More AP is always good.
- Ultimate Hunter – Because Vel’Koz’s ult is a game-changer.
And for the secondary tree, they recommended:
- Manaflow Band – Still important for the mana.
- Scorch – Extra burn damage.
I also adjusted my item build, as suggested by some guides. Instead of rushing an item, I built towards Malignance, then grabbed Sorcerer’s Shoes, followed by Liandry’s Torment and Shadowflame. It’s a pretty standard build, but apparently, it’s the meta for a reason.
Second Attempt
Armed with this newfound knowledge, I queued up for another game. The difference was night and day. Suddenly, I was actually doing damage. Like, a lot of damage. Dark Harvest was proccing like crazy, and I was chunking people left and right. My ult felt way more impactful, and I was finally able to carry my weight in teamfights.
We ended up winning that game, and I felt like I had actually contributed. It was a good feeling. I felt great that I had won this game. I still have a lot to learn about Vel’Koz, but I think I’m finally on the right path. It’s crazy how much of a difference a few small changes can make.
So, there you have it. My journey to figuring out Vel’Koz in ARAM. It was a bit of a bumpy ride, but I think I’ve learned a lot. Hopefully, this helps someone else out there who’s struggling with this tentacled beast. And remember, don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. You never know what you might discover!
