Alright, so I’ve been messing around with Vel’Koz in ARAM lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. I wanted to share some of my findings on what runes work best for this tentacled beast in the chaos of the Howling Abyss.
First off, I jumped into a few games just to get a feel for how Vel’Koz plays in ARAM. It’s pretty much a poke-fest, right? You’re just lobbing abilities from downtown and hoping for the best. So, naturally, I started thinking about runes that could boost that long-range damage.
My Rune Experiments
- Experiment 1: I went with the classic Arcane Comet setup. You know, the one where you poke them down and then the comet adds that extra bit of oomph. It felt okay, but not amazing. I noticed I was missing out on some consistent damage.
- Experiment 2: Then I tried Dark Harvest. The idea was to stack up those soul fragments and become a late-game monster. It was fun when it worked, but relying on getting those stacks felt kinda inconsistent. Sometimes I’d be a powerhouse, other times I felt like a wet noodle.
- Experiment 3: This is where things got interesting. I stumbled upon First Strike. Hear me out – you hit them first, you get bonus gold and deal extra damage. In ARAM, where everyone’s just throwing abilities around, it’s pretty easy to proc. This felt pretty good and I started noticing I could start to have a bigger impact in games.
After a bunch of games, I started to see a pattern. First Strike felt like the most reliable keystone. It gives you that extra gold to hit your item spikes faster, and the bonus damage is noticeable, especially in those early skirmishes. In addition, I found that in most games, I was able to proc it a lot, which means more gold and more items to poke more.
My Go-To Setup
So, here’s what I’ve been rocking lately:
- Primary (Inspiration): First Strike, Magical Footwear, Future’s Market, Cosmic Insight
- Secondary (Domination): Taste of Blood, Ultimate Hunter
I know, I know, it might sound a bit weird, but trust me, give it a shot. The extra gold from First Strike helps you get your core items like Malignance and Liandry’s Torment much faster. Magical Footwear saves you some gold on boots, Future’s Market lets you get those crucial components earlier, and Cosmic Insight gives you more ability spam. As for the secondary tree, Taste of Blood offers a bit of sustain, which is always nice in ARAM, and Ultimate Hunter makes your ultimate come up more often, which is huge for those big teamfights.
I’m still experimenting, but so far, this First Strike setup has been the most consistent for me. I’ve been winning more games and feeling like I’m actually contributing to the team’s success. I won around 52% of my games, which isn’t too bad. If you’re a Vel’Koz fan in ARAM, give it a try and let me know what you think! Maybe you’ll find something even better. This is just what’s been working for this average ARAM enjoyer. I tried this setup in patches 14.18 and 14.24, so it should work fine for a while.
