What is totem glass? Here are the basics you need to know to get started!

So, I was messing around with this idea for a “totem glass” thing. It all started when I was thinking about how important it is for systems to, like, not totally break down when something goes wrong. You know, especially those big, spread-out systems that are all the rage these days.

I started by looking into tools, you know, like those formula auditing tools. I messed with some tracer things, but I can’t really remember what they were called now. It was all a bit over my head, to be honest.

  • Then I stumbled upon this thing called “Real User Monitoring,” or RUM for short. It sounded fancy, and it was part of some Datadog offering, but that didn’t really click for me. I was more interested in the practical side of things, not some enterprise-level stuff.
  • I even tried to, like, prepare some general journal entries based on some made-up transactions. I had this chart of accounts, and it was all very official, but it didn’t really help me with my totem glass idea. It felt like I was going off on a tangent.

What I really wanted to figure out were the key things that make a system healthy and stable. I spent a bunch of time thinking about that, but I didn’t make much progress.

Making it Interactive

Then, I had this other idea to turn the whole thing into an interactive game. I thought about keeping the parts I liked and ditching the rest. I even imagined putting each part of my idea onto separate slides, like a presentation, and making them into movable pictures. I was going to rearrange them and stuff, but that got way too complicated. It was like a rabbit hole of ideas, and I got lost in it.

Secure Boot Stumped Me

The last thing I tried was looking into Secure Boot. It’s this feature in something called UEFI. I kept reading about how it checks the digital signature of system files and drivers during the boot process. Something about an update file and digital signature. Then, after tinkering with the computer for a day, I realized that I still had to do something else to get it done, but I couldn’t get it to work. I think I messed something up with the settings or something. I gave up after that.

So, yeah, my totem glass project didn’t exactly go as planned. I tried a bunch of different things, but nothing really worked out. It was a good learning experience, though, I guess. At least, I got a story out of it, right?
