How to make a totem pole with bear? Learn about the steps involved in crafting traditional art.
Okay, so, I wanted to make one of those totem pole things, you know, with a bear on it. It all started because I saw this cool picture online, and I thought, “Hey, I could totally do that.” I mean, how hard could it be, right?
First, I needed some wood. I went to the local hardware store and got a big old log. It was heavier than I expected, so I had to ask the guy there to help me load it into my car. He gave me this look, like, “What is this person doing?” But whatever, I got my log.
Next, I needed tools. I borrowed a chainsaw from my neighbor, which was kind of scary to use, but I managed. I cut the log into a few pieces, so I could start shaping it. I also got some chisels and a mallet, because you gotta have the right tools, you know?
Then came the fun part – carving! I started with the bear at the top. I sketched out a rough design on the wood, just a simple bear face. Using the chainsaw, I carefully removed the big chunks of wood, it’s really a hard work. And then I switched to the chisels for the details. It took a while, but slowly, the bear started to take shape. I even gave it a little grin, because why not?

After the bear, I worked on the other parts of the pole. I added some simple shapes, like wings and some geometric patterns. I’m not really an artist, but I think it turned out pretty good. It was a lot of work, though. My hands were so sore at the end of each day!
Once the carving was done, I had to decide how to finish it. I thought about painting it, but then I decided to just stain it instead. I wanted it to look kind of rustic, you know? I found a dark wood stain at the store and applied it with an old rag. The stain really brought out the grain of the wood, which was cool.
Finally, I had to figure out how to get the darn thing to stand up. I dug a hole in my backyard and put the pole in it. It was a bit wobbly at first, so I packed some rocks around the base to make it more stable. And there it was, my very own totem pole with a bear on top!
It’s not perfect
It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of it. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot. Plus, it looks awesome in my backyard. Every time I see it, I think, “Yeah, I made that.” And that’s a pretty good feeling. I’ve taken a picture and post it on my blog.
