Double Feature Crape Myrtle Guide | What You Need To Know About This Plant
Okay, folks, let me tell you about my little gardening adventure with the “Double Feature” crape myrtle. I’d been wanting to add some color to my yard, and these beauties caught my eye.
I started by figuring out where to plant them. I read somewhere that these plants can grow up to 6 to 8 feet tall, so I picked a spot with plenty of room. I also made sure the spot gets a good dose of sunshine because these plants love the sun.
Next, I spaced them out about 3-5 feet apart, figuring they’d need room to bush out. It was a bit of guesswork, but I wanted to give them space to grow without overcrowding each other.
- Digging the holes was the next step. I made sure they were wide enough and deep enough for the root balls. It wasn’t too hard, just a bit of good old-fashioned shoveling.
- After that, I placed each crape myrtle in its hole and filled it back up with soil. I made sure to pat down the soil firmly to get rid of any air pockets. It was a bit messy, but hey, that’s gardening for you.
- Then came the watering. I gave each plant a good soaking to help them settle in. I also added a bit of mulch around the base to help retain moisture. It looked pretty neat, if I do say so myself.
I’ve been keeping an eye on them since then. Watering them regularly, especially during dry spells. I also gave them some fertilizer a few weeks after planting to give them a boost.
Watching them grow
It’s been a few months now, and I’m happy to report that they’re doing great! They’ve grown quite a bit, and the leaves have this beautiful wine-red color when they’re new. And the blooms, oh the blooms! They started showing up in late spring, just like the fact sheet said, and they’re this vibrant ruby-red color. It’s like a little fireworks show in my backyard. These plants are supposed to bloom all the way to fall, and some people said they can live for 20-30 years. I did not find it hard to believe.
Honestly, it’s been a rewarding experience. There’s something satisfying about nurturing something and watching it grow. And the fact that these plants add so much beauty to my yard is a bonus. If you’re thinking about adding some color to your garden, I’d definitely recommend giving the “Double Feature” crape myrtle a try. It’s been a fun ride, and I’m looking forward to seeing these beauties thrive for years to come.
