So, I’ve been needing some new running shoes for a while now. My old ones were totally beat, like, holes in the soles, no support, the whole nine yards. I kept putting it off, but finally, I decided to bite the bullet and head over to the Potomac Running Store.
First off, I was browsing online to see what’s available. I saw some apartment listings for rent, which is not what I wanted. Then I stumbled upon some info about a rowing facility on the Potomac River. Cool, but again, not what I was after. Then things started to get interesting. I found a shoe called GEL-VENTURE 9, which was described as good for short runs and hiking. Sounded promising! There was also this NIKE FREE RN 5.0 2021, which boasted about responsive foam and flexibility. Alright, getting warmer.
There was also this page about a French restaurant in Potomac, which, you know, made me hungry, but not helpful for my shoe search. Then, bingo! I found a website that seemed to have it all – shoes, clothing, and a sweet 365-day return policy. They even had this installment payment thing from “*.” I’m always wary of these things, they must have a catch, right?
After some initial browsing, I decided to just go to the actual Potomac Running Store. I walked in, and the place was packed! I mean, tons of people, all looking for their perfect shoe. I started wandering around, checking out the different brands and styles. They had everything from those minimalist barefoot-style shoes to the super-cushioned ones that make you feel like you’re walking on clouds.
I finally flagged down one of the employees, a young guy who looked like he ran marathons in his sleep. I told him I needed some new kicks, and he immediately started asking me all sorts of questions: What kind of running do I do? How often? Any injuries? It was like a full-on interrogation! But hey, I appreciated the thoroughness.
He brought out a few different pairs for me to try on. First, I slipped on the GEL-VENTURE 9. They felt pretty good, nice and supportive, but a little stiff for my taste. Next up were the NIKE FREE RN 5.0 2021. Now, these were interesting. Super lightweight and flexible, but I wasn’t sure if they had enough cushioning for my longer runs. We went through a couple of other options, each with their own pros and cons.

Even though it took a while, the trip to the Potomac Running Store was totally worth it. I got the new shoes and I feel ready to run for a long time! I can’t wait to break them in!
