Fire Water Feature: What Is It and How to Install It in Your Home or Garden Easily
Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to spice up my backyard for ages, and I finally decided to do something about it. I was thinking, “What could be cooler than combining fire and water?” I mean, it’s like the ultimate combo, right? So, I went for it – I built a fire and water feature, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride.
First off, I had to figure out what I even wanted. I spent hours looking at pictures online, trying to get some inspiration. There were so many options! Fire pits with waterfalls, fountains with fire coming out the top, even these crazy things where the fire was like, inside the water. It was nuts.
After a lot of back and forth, I decided to go with a simple design that incorporated natural stones, basalt columns. I figured it would be easier to build, and I liked the idea of something that looked a bit more natural. I found a local place that sold all kinds of landscaping stuff, and I picked up a bunch of these basalt columns, like the ones you see in national parks. They were kind of rough around the edges, but I thought they looked cool.
Next, I had to figure out how to get the water flowing. I’m not exactly a plumber, so this part was a bit tricky. I ended up buying a simple water pump and some tubing. I connected the tubing to the pump and ran it up to the top of the basalt columns. I drilled some holes in the tops of the columns, so the water would bubble out. It took a little trial and error, but I finally got it working. It actually looked great!

Here’s the basic setup I ended up with:
- A small pond as the base, lined with a heavy-duty liner to hold the water.
- A set of natural basalt columns of different heights, arranged in the center of the pond.
- A submersible pump in the pond to circulate the water.
- Tubing running from the pump to the top of the basalt columns.
- A separate fire feature built into the center, right in the middle of the pond.
Now for the fire part. This was the part I was most excited about, but also the most nervous. I mean, playing with fire is no joke, right? I did a ton of research online and talked to a few people who had built fire pits before. I found a company called “Fire by Design” that looked like they made good stuff, and ordered a burner and some other parts from them. They seemed to know what they were doing with all their tests and engineering stuff.
Once I had all the parts, I started putting it all together. I built a small, raised platform in the middle of the pond for the fire pit. I used some leftover stones from another project, so it kind of matched the rest of the landscaping. I carefully installed the burner and connected it to a propane tank. Then, I added some lava rocks around the burner to make it look nicer and help distribute the heat. I also added a feature that made the water go around the fire in a cool way, it looks like magic!
Finally, the moment of truth. I turned on the water pump, and the water started flowing over the basalt columns. It looked awesome! Then, I lit the fire pit. The flames danced around the water, and it was seriously mesmerizing. I couldn’t believe I had actually built this thing.
Building this fire and water feature was definitely a challenge, but it was so worth it.
It’s become the centerpiece of my backyard, and everyone who sees it is blown away. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day. I’ve spent countless evenings sitting by the fire, listening to the sound of the water, and just enjoying the ambiance.
