Alright, let’s talk about them E90 daytime running lights, the ones that are always on, or supposed to be, or maybe not, who knows, it’s confusing! I ain’t no mechanic, just a regular person trying to figure this stuff out, you know?
So, first things first, these lights, they’re supposed to be on during the day, right? That’s why they call ‘em “daytime running lights.” Makes sense. But then sometimes they’re on when it’s dark, and sometimes they ain’t on at all. It’s a real head-scratcher.
Now, some folks say you can mess with the “iDrive” thing. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Like something you’d find on a spaceship. But from what I hear, you go in there, poke around in the settings, and you can turn these lights on and off. Sounds simple enough, but you know how these things are. You press one button, and something else goes haywire. It’s like that time I tried to fix the washing machine, ended up flooding the whole dang basement!
Then there’s this “BC” thing, the “board computer.” Another fancy name. Apparently, you can use that to control the lights too. And a toggle switch, whatever that is. Sounds like a lot of work to me. I just want the lights to work, you know? I ain’t got time for all this computer stuff.
- Some fellas say if you got the headlights set to “auto,” the daytime lights are always on. Day or night, doesn’t matter. Seems kinda silly, but what do I know?
- And then there’s the “angel eyes.” Pretty name, but again, confusing. Are they the same as the daytime lights? Are they different? Some say they’re brighter, some say they’re not. It’s enough to make your head spin.
I heard tell you can change some “value” somewhere to make these angel eyes stay on all the time. But that sounds like messing with wires and stuff. I ain’t touching no wires. Last time I did that, I nearly electrocuted myself. Not doing that again!
Then there’s the light switch itself. You’d think it’d be simple, right? On, off, that’s it. But no, there’s “position 0” and “position 1.” And one of them is supposed to be for just the daytime lights, just the angel eyes. But which one? It’s a mystery!
And get this, on some newer cars, you can turn the daytime lights on and off with that iDrive thing again. So they make it easier, then they make it complicated again. Can’t they just make up their minds?
Now, if you’re trying to get to the “ECU” to mess with the lights, well, good luck to you. Sounds like a whole lot of trouble. Taking off covers, bolts… I’d rather just leave it alone. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, that’s what I say. Unless it is broke, then you gotta fix it, I guess. But I still ain’t messing with no ECU.
And another thing, if your lights are staying on all the time, even when the car is parked, that ain’t right. Could be something got wet or corroded, messing with the electrics. That sounds expensive. Hope that don’t happen to me.
So, to sum it all up, these daytime running lights, they’re a pain in the neck. Sometimes they’re on, sometimes they’re off, sometimes they’re doing something in between. If they’re working, great. If they ain’t, well, maybe just leave ‘em alone. Unless you’re one of them fancy computer whizzes, then go ahead and mess with the iDrive and the BC and all that stuff. Me? I’ll just stick to driving the car and hoping the lights do what they’re supposed to do.
But if they don’t, well, as long as I can see where I’m goin’, it’s good enough for me. Safety first, that’s what I always say. And try not to break nothin’ while fiddlin’ with them fancy buttons, ya hear?
