Well, howdy there! Let’s talk about this…uh…cactus totem thing. I ain’t never heard of it ‘fore, but my grandkid showed me some pictures, and I reckon I can tell ya a thing or two.
What is a Cactus Totem Anyways?
From what I gather, it ain’t nothin’ fancy. Just some cactus pieces stacked up on top of each other, like a…well, like a totem pole, I guess! You can use all sorts of cactus, big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones. Heck, you can even use other plants too, if you’re feelin’ adventurous. It’s all about makin’ somethin’ pretty for your yard or porch.
Making Your Own Cactus Totem – It Ain’t Rocket Science
Now, if you wanna make one of these things, it ain’t too hard. First off, you gotta get yourself some cactus. Don’t go stealin’ it from your neighbor’s yard, though! That ain’t right. You can buy it at them fancy garden stores, or maybe find some pieces that have fallen off. Just be careful, them stickers are nasty!
- Cut it Right: Now, you gotta cut them cactus pieces just right. Make sure they ain’t too short, ya hear? A couple inches or more is good. And then, this is important, let the cut end dry out for a day or so. That way, it won’t rot when you stick it in the dirt.
- Pot it Up: Get yourself a pot, not too big, not too small, just right. Fill it up with that special cactus dirt, the kind that drains good. You don’t want them roots sittin’ in water, no sirree.
- Plant it Deep: Stick that cactus piece in the dirt, push it down a little, make sure it’s standin’ up straight. You don’t want no crooked totem, now do ya?
- Sunny Side Up: Cactus, they like sunshine, lots of it. Put your totem where it can get at least six or eight hours of sun every day. If it don’t get enough sun, it ain’t gonna grow right, and it might even get all mushy and gross.
Big or Small, It’s Your Call
Now, how big you make this totem is up to you. You can make a little one for your windowsill, or a great big one for your yard. I seen pictures of some that are taller than a man! Takes a long time for them to get that big though, years and years, maybe even longer than I’ve been alive, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
Decoratin’ with Your Cactus Totem
Once you got your totem all made, you can put it wherever you want. Like I said, it looks nice on the porch or patio. You can put it in your garden, too. Just make sure it ain’t in the way of the lawnmower. My husband used to mow over everything. Darn near gave me a heart attack a few times.
Taking Care of Your Totem – Don’t Drown It!
Now, takin’ care of a cactus totem ain’t hard. Main thing is, don’t overwater it. Cactus don’t like a lot of water. Water it good when the soil is dry, and then leave it alone. And don’t forget to give it plenty of sunshine. That’s what they like best.
Why Bother with a Cactus Totem?
Well, I reckon it’s just somethin’ pretty to look at. And it’s kinda fun to make, too. Keeps you busy, you know? Better than sittin’ around watchin’ TV all day, that’s for sure. Plus, it’s somethin’ different. Everybody’s got flowers, but not everybody’s got a cactus totem.
So, there you have it. Everything you ever wanted to know about cactus totems, and probably a whole lot more. Now go on and make one yourself. And if you mess it up, don’t worry about it. Just start over. It ain’t the end of the world. Life’s too short to worry about a little ol’ cactus. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. My grandbabies are comin’ over, and they’re always hungry as bears.
Final words: Now remember what I said, and don’t forget, if you use a big pot, make sure it ain’t too heavy to move around, you might want to move it inside in the winter to keep it from freezing. Cactus can be picky about that cold weather. Oh and be careful of the thorns. They can be a real pain if you ain’t careful!
