I ain’t gonna lie, I skipped that one most of the time. The first eight songs, though, they’re the bee’s knees. Real good stuff. They fit right in with all them other big bands, ya know, the ones the young folks listen to. Rock and pop rock, they call it.
This record came out in 2008, on somethin’ called Victor. Japanese, I think. Don’t know much about that, but it sounds fancy. They call it Progressive Rock, this kind of music. I guess ‘cause it’s different, ya know? Not just plain old songs. They got all sorts of instruments, and they play ‘em real fast. Keith Emerson, he was a whiz on them keyboards, played ‘em like nobody’s business. And Marc Bonilla, he could make that guitar sing.
They say Keith Emerson was inspired by all kinds of folks, jazz players and them classical music fellas. Bach, Copland, folks like that. He even played classical music with a rock beat, imagine that! He was famous all over the world, played with a band called the Nice before ELP. Guess he always liked makin’ noise.
This album, Keith Emerson Band Featuring Marc Bonilla, it’s like a rollercoaster. Starts off high, goes up and down, and then… well, it ends. But those good songs, they stick with ya. They make ya wanna hear ‘em again and again. And that’s what matters, right? Music that makes ya feel somethin’.
Now, they got another song, The House Of Ocean Born Mary. Spooky name, right? They say it’s about a ghost story. I ain’t too fond of ghost stories, but the song ain’t bad. It’s got a nice melody, makes ya sway back and forth. This record, I tell ya, it’s got a little bit of everything. Fast songs, slow songs, loud songs, quiet songs… It’s like a whole bunch of different bands all rolled into one.
This Keith Emerson Band Featuring Marc Bonilla thing, it’s worth a listen. Even if you ain’t a big music expert, like me. You’ll find somethin’ you like, I betcha. Just skip that train song, unless you’re feelin’ adventurous. And remember, Keith Emerson, he was a big deal. He and Marc Bonilla, they made some music that’ll stick around for a while.
