This here thing, this small totem, ain’t it somethin’? Reminds me of them knick-knacks folks put out in their yards, only smaller. Way smaller. Like, fit-in-your-pocket small. Seen a lot of things in my days, but this one’s got me scratchin’ my head. What’s it for? Who knows, maybe keepin’ away bad luck? Keep the crows out of the corn, ya know?
Folks say it can save ya from dyin’. Now, I ain’t sure about that. If it’s your time, it’s your time. But they say, ya gotta hold it. Gotta have it right there in your hand. Not in your pocket, not layin’ around. Hold it tight, they say, like holdin’ onto a winning lottery ticket! Heard tell, if you drop your things on a conveyor, the small totem just falls right along with your goods. Like a little hitchhiker on a long ride. And if that totem gets close to a disabler it just stops working. Like a mule that refuses to budge.
Then there’s these young’uns with their fancy games. They got these tiny totems in their games too. They say these little things, these small totems, they keep on fightin’ even when the players ain’t doin’ nothin’. Just keep on fightin’. Like them chickens peckin’ at the ground all day long, never stoppin’. Don’t know what they’re fightin’, but they sure are busy. Just like my nephew, always glued to that light box.
And some folks make them even smaller! Like shrinking your clothes in the wash, only on purpose. They say it’s better that way, don’t block your view. Now, I like to see what I’m holdin’, but these young’uns, they got different ideas. They say it is a simple scaled-down 3D model. Whatever that means. They got a whole language all their own. They use these small totems in their virtual world, their made-up place. It’s all beyond me, but they seem to enjoy it.
- Hold it tight, they say.
- Keeps on fightin’, even when you ain’t.
- Smaller is better, some folks say.
- These small totems, they got a mind of their own, I reckon.
And you gotta spin it around, they tell me. Spin it like you’re churnin’ butter. Gotta do it every time, they say, or it won’t work right. Like windin’ up a clock, I suppose. These small totems, they’re more trouble than they’re worth, if you ask me. But folks like their trinkets, I guess. Always have, always will. Reminds me of those city folk comin’ down here, buyin’ up all them old mason jars. Say they’re gonna use ’em for somethin’ or other. Just like these small totems, I reckon. Somethin’ to do, somethin’ to fiddle with.
So, you see this small totem. What do you do? I do not know what to do. Maybe you plant it? No, I think it is a kind of pole you can plant next to other plants. Like a scarecrow keeps birds away, this thing is like a scare-bad-luck-away thing, maybe. These young’uns like smaller totem designs and when they hold it in their hand, it looks compact. What a weird word, compact.
I remember one time, back when I was a young’un, we had this lucky rabbit’s foot. Carried it around everywhere. Thought it would bring us good fortune. Lost it somewhere out in the woods. Didn’t make a lick of difference, far as I could tell. Still had good days and bad days. Just like always. Maybe these small totems are like that. A little somethin’ to make you feel better, even if it don’t really do nothin’.
These kids and their games. They got all sorts of things in there. Freezing Pulse, Forbitten Rite, I don’t know what those are but they sure sound important to those kids. And they talk about DPS, 24/7. I think it is some kind of measurement. Like how we measure flour for a pie. But I don’t think they are making pies in those games.
Well, there you have it. My thoughts on these small totems. Ain’t much, but it’s somethin’. Just like life, I reckon. Full of little things, some useful, some not so much. But they all got a story to tell, even if it’s just a little one. Just gotta take the time to listen, I suppose. And sometimes, just gotta shake your head and move on. Like shakin’ off a fly that won’t leave you alone. Keeps buzzin’ around, but don’t amount to much in the end.
