Well, let me tell you, I seen a lot of things in my time, but these totem plant pole things, them’s something else. I ain’t never seen nothin’ like ’em. These totem plant poles, they’re like sticks, but with plants growin’ all over ’em. It’s like they took a regular ol’ plant, and made it climb up a stick, like a little monkey up a tree.
Now, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout how to make one of these totem plant pole contraptions. First, they say you gotta get the right kind of stick. Not just any old stick will do. It’s gotta be some special wood, somethin’ called Cedar, I reckon. They say it lasts a long time, like that old rocking chair on my porch. My grandpa made that chair, and it’s still holdin’ up, strong as ever.
So you get your wood, this cedar stuff, and it better be big enough, mind you. Don’t go gettin’ no twig and thinkin’ you’re gonna grow a big ol’ plant on it. Then, you gotta find a plant. Some of them plants, they like to climb, like that ivy growin’ on the side of the shed. I swear, that ivy, it’s gonna take over the whole darn place if I don’t keep an eye on it. You need to put some soft thing on it, like cotton string, they say.
You get one of them climbing plants, and you wrap it ’round the totem plant pole, real gentle like. You don’t wanna hurt the little fella. You tie it on, with some string or somethin’ soft. Not too tight, though. You gotta let it breathe, just like you and me. They put it in a small container at first, like 6 inches.

- Wrap it ’round the pole, nice and easy.
- Tie it on with somethin’ soft.
- Give it some water, but don’t drown it.
Then, you gotta water it, just like you water your garden. But don’t go drownin’ it. Plants, they need water, but too much ain’t good for ’em. It’s like when I make soup. You gotta put enough water in, but not too much, or it’ll be all watery and no good. And I don’t like a watery soup. Not one bit.
These plants on a totem plant pole, they like to be snug, like a bug in a rug. So you gotta pack that dirt in there real tight. Don’t leave no air pockets. That dirt, it’s like their home, you see. You wouldn’t want your house to have holes in the walls, would you? No sir. These plants, they like a solid home, just like us folks.
Now, I seen some of these totem plant poles, and they got all sorts of plants on ’em. Some got flowers, some got leaves, all different colors. It’s like a rainbow, but on a stick. I reckon it’s kinda pretty, in its own way. Reminds me of my flower garden, back when I could still bend down and tend to it. Now, my old bones ain’t what they used to be.
But these totem plant poles, they bring a little bit of that garden right up to where you can see it, without havin’ to bend down. That’s kinda nice, I suppose. It’s like havin’ a little piece of nature, right there in your house, or on your porch, or wherever you put it. And I do like a bit of nature.
If you make them totem plant poles, you gotta make sure they are firm. You do not want your plant to fall over. That would be no good, not good at all. The plant would be damaged, and you have to start all over. Make sure the plants are tied in a couple places so it does not fall.
They say these totem plant pole things are good for cleanin’ the air, too. Plants, they do that, you know. They take in the bad air, and they give out the good air. It’s like magic, almost. I don’t rightly understand how it all works, but I know it’s true. My grandma, she used to say that plants are good for the soul, and I reckon she was right about that.
So, if you’re thinkin’ ’bout gettin’ one of these totem plant pole things, or makin’ one yourself, I say go for it. It might be a bit of work, but it’s worth it in the end. You’ll have a little piece of nature, right there with you. And who knows, maybe it’ll even clean the air a little bit. And that’s somethin’ we could all use, I reckon. Clean air and a little bit of green, that’s good for everybody. And that’s all I gotta say about that. It is time for supper, and I am hungry. I think I will have some of that soup I made. I sure do love some soup.
